The Living Environments Laboratory (LEL) invites UW-Madison faculty and collaborators to visit the CAVE every fourth Wednesday of the month BY REQUEST. This event focuses on collaboration and new research development, and is not intended for a general audience.

Some of the lab’s most interesting and unlikely collaborations have emerged from the Researchers’ Open House events. Examples include the Neutrino Visualization project and WordCake. This forum is for any researcher in any discipline who is open to new ways of visualizing data, environments and objects.

The LEL is a space and a place where scholars explore the connection between environment, technology, human action, experience and visualization.

The lab represents a multidisciplinary group of faculty and students who share an affinity for incorporating 3D design, visualization and virtual reality environments into education, research and creative expression. LEL’s primary instrument for research is a six-sided virtual reality CAVE.

LEL engages in projects with departments such as Industrial and Systems Engineering, Design Studies, Library and Information Studies, Nursing, Art, Dance as well as projects in Digital Humanities. The lab is developing a broader intellectual foray by expanding its repertoire to the types of scientific and scholarly data it analyzes and visualizes. LEL welcomes collaborators from across the UW-Madison campus, the state and the nation to join in this endeavor through data acquisition, visualization practices and 3D data analysis.
