The Future of Discovery is a Nation of Hackers

In a talk titled, “The Future of Discovery is a Nation of Hackers,” WID researcher Ben Shapiro talks about the rapid development of the social Web and how it offers scientists new possibilities for re-imagining scientific discovery. He describes how theories of cognition, culture and design, as well as the growing “maker movement,” point toward a paradigm shift in how science happens.

Using the game Trails Forward,” a joint project of the WID Games+Learning+Society and Optimization themes as an example, Shapiro discusses how we can transform the research questions that we can ask, the ways that they’re investigated and how the public learns and participates.
