SUMMARY:Crossroads of Ideas: When Antibiotics Fail
DESCRIPTION:Part 3 in the productive failure miniseries!\n\n\nHow do we manage when bacteria\, viruses\, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines? What are our options? WID’s Marc Chevrette and Tiny Earth’s Sarah Miller discuss lifesaving drugs: how they are discovered & what we can do to keep them potent.

SUMMARY:Crossroads of Ideas: The Upside of AI Failure
DESCRIPTION:What failure in AI can teach us\, and how it can inspire innovation\, critical thinking\, and resilience.\n\n\nFailure is part of progress\, especially in the fast-moving field of artificial intelligence. This Crossroads of Ideas event\, part of our three-part mini-series on “productive failure\,” brings together David Fields (UW-Madison Department of East Asian Studies) and Rob Nowak (UW-Madison Computer\, Data & Information Sciences) to explore what happens when AI technology falls short. From real-world research that didn’t go as planned to the broader implications for society\, this conversation highlights how failures can deepen our understanding\, shape future innovation\, and help us navigate technology’s role in our lives. Together\, they’ll discuss what failure in AI can teach us\, and how it can inspire innovation\, critical thinking\, and resilience.

SUMMARY:Crossroads of Ideas: How Failure Fuels Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Part I in our Productive Failure Mini-Series\n\n\nFailure is often seen as a setback—but in science and entrepreneurship\, it can be the spark that drives breakthroughs. In this first installment of our Productive Failure Mini-Series\, explore how missteps\, unexpected results\, and strategic pivots shape discovery\, strengthen ideas\, and fuel innovation. Through real-world examples from the laboratory and the startup landscape\, this conversation reveals how embracing uncertainty and learning from what doesn’t work can open the door to transformative success.

SUMMARY:Michelle Thaller: Cosmic Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Chasing Asteroids for Clues to the Origins of Life\n\n\nJoin Michelle Thaller\, former NASA science communicator\, for an evening exploring the origins of life. Thaller\, in conversation with Eric Wilcots\, Dean of the College of Letters & Sciences and Professor in the Dept of Astronomy\, will talk about the OSIRIS-REx mission – an audacious project to return a sample from an asteroid. No problem\, right? Just chase down a small rock 200 million miles away\, traveling literally faster than a speeding bullet\, vacuum up a sample of its surface\, and shoot it back to Earth. The story turned out to be more difficult\, dramatic\, and rewarding than anyone expected. Join us to find out why we went to so much trouble to bring back an ancient sample of our solar system and what was waiting inside that absolutely blew our minds. This event will take place in the DeLuca Forum in the Discovery Building.

SUMMARY:Crossroads of Ideas: Threading the Story of Earth's Oldest Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Ancient geology meets modern creativity! Scientists studying the Earth’s oldest rocks collab with a textile artist to bring them to life!\n\n\nJoin us for a very special Wisconsin Science Festival edition of Crossroads of Ideas\, where ancient geology meets modern creativity. This engaging evening features scientists Tyler Blum\, Annie Bauer\, and Emily Mixon\, who have been studying the Earth’s oldest rocks – Acasta Gneiss (that’s pronounced “nice”) – and collaborating with local textile artist\, Leah Evans\, to bring 4-billion-year-old stories to life. \nIn conversation with UW-Madison Geology Museum Associate Director\, Brooke Norsted\, learn how these researchers and artist have explored deep time\, planetary processes\, and creative interpretation. Be among the first to experience the unveiling of Leah’s final artwork – an awe-inspiring textile piece created for the Geology Museum. Learn how curiosity\, conversation\, and collaboration turned billion-year-old rocks into an artistic and scientific celebration of deep time and deeper connections. \nThis event will take place in the DeLuca Forum in the UW-Madison Discovery Building. \nRegistration requested

SUMMARY:Finding Your Place in Science
DESCRIPTION:A reflective workshop on belonging\, identity\, and the paths of science\, guided by Madison author\, editor\, and writing mentor. All Welcome.\n\n\nFinding Your Place in Science: A Writing Workshop to Explore Scientific Identity \nOct. 20\, 3 pm\, Location: 1145 Discovery Building \nLight snacks provided \nMichelle Wildgen is an editor\, teacher\, and writer of literary fiction and essays\, as well as the author of four novels and cofounder of the Madison Writers’ Studio. \nA scientific identity – essentially\, whether a person feels they belong in the world of science —is associated with longevity and success in STEM-related fields. But what does it mean to belong in science? Does it matter if you identify as a science person? \nAs part of the Wisconsin Science Festival\, the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery is offering a writing workshop focused on scientific identity\, aimed at undergrad and graduate students\, but also open to the public. We’ll discuss some of the components researchers have identified as part of this sense of belonging in science; consider some of the conscious and unconscious assumptions we might have about who belongs in science; and expand our definitions and explore how varied a scientific identity can be. With a mix of discussion in small and large groups and impromptu writing\, we’ll investigate the broad concept of an identity and how it can be useful in the face of obstacles. Finally\, we’ll consider the more specific idea of belonging in the scientific realm\, what helps you find that sense of belonging and what might prevent it. \nThis workshop is not solely for people who already feel they belong–plenty of people study and work in science without being certain if they do–but for anyone who is interested in using writing and discussion to consider and clarify what this concept of scientific identity means to you.

SUMMARY:Geospatial Data Carpentry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:https://uw-madison-datascience.github.io/2025-06-02-uwmadison-dc-geospatial/\n\n\nThe goal of this workshop is to provide an introduction to core geospatial data concepts and dive into working with raster/vector data\, including how to open\, work with\, and plot vector and raster-format spatial data in R. Additional topics include working with spatial metadata (extent and coordinate reference systems)\, reprojecting spatial data\, and working with raster time series data. This lesson assumes you have some knowledge of R. If you’ve never used R before\, or need a refresher\, start with our Introduction to R for Geospatial Data lesson webpage.

DESCRIPTION:Explore how trends\, plans\, viewpoints\, projects\, materials\, and sounds develop. Where we are and where we might be headed in the future.\n\n\n\nWhat can archeology tell us about the development of our forebears? How can we develop better conditions for dairy animals? How do babies develop language? How do computer scientists develop operating systems? What is musical development\, and how did Franz Schubert master it in the beautiful string quartet Death and the Maiden? Find out at SoundWaves’ third event in our Development series\, with special guests the Pro Arte Quartet. \nSpeakers:Sarah Clayton\, anthropology \nJennifer van Os\, dairy science \nMike Swift\, comp sci \nJenny Saffran\, psych \nModerator: Daniel Grabois \n\n\nWe value inclusion and access for all participants.
