SUMMARY:Crossroads of Ideas: How Failure Fuels Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Part I in our Productive Failure Mini-Series\n\n\nFailure is often seen as a setback—but in science and entrepreneurship\, it can be the spark that drives breakthroughs. In this first installment of our Productive Failure Mini-Series\, explore how missteps\, unexpected results\, and strategic pivots shape discovery\, strengthen ideas\, and fuel innovation. Through real-world examples from the laboratory and the startup landscape\, this conversation reveals how embracing uncertainty and learning from what doesn’t work can open the door to transformative success.

SUMMARY:Michelle Thaller: Cosmic Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Chasing Asteroids for Clues to the Origins of Life\n\n\nJoin Michelle Thaller\, former NASA science communicator\, for an evening exploring the origins of life. Thaller\, in conversation with Eric Wilcots\, Dean of the College of Letters & Sciences and Professor in the Dept of Astronomy\, will talk about the OSIRIS-REx mission – an audacious project to return a sample from an asteroid. No problem\, right? Just chase down a small rock 200 million miles away\, traveling literally faster than a speeding bullet\, vacuum up a sample of its surface\, and shoot it back to Earth. The story turned out to be more difficult\, dramatic\, and rewarding than anyone expected. Join us to find out why we went to so much trouble to bring back an ancient sample of our solar system and what was waiting inside that absolutely blew our minds. This event will take place in the DeLuca Forum in the Discovery Building.

SUMMARY:Crossroads of Ideas: Threading the Story of Earth's Oldest Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Ancient geology meets modern creativity! Scientists studying the Earth’s oldest rocks collab with a textile artist to bring them to life!\n\n\nJoin us for a very special Wisconsin Science Festival edition of Crossroads of Ideas\, where ancient geology meets modern creativity. This engaging evening features scientists Tyler Blum\, Annie Bauer\, and Emily Mixon\, who have been studying the Earth’s oldest rocks – Acasta Gneiss (that’s pronounced “nice”) – and collaborating with local textile artist\, Leah Evans\, to bring 4-billion-year-old stories to life. \nIn conversation with UW-Madison Geology Museum Associate Director\, Brooke Norsted\, learn how these researchers and artist have explored deep time\, planetary processes\, and creative interpretation. Be among the first to experience the unveiling of Leah’s final artwork – an awe-inspiring textile piece created for the Geology Museum. Learn how curiosity\, conversation\, and collaboration turned billion-year-old rocks into an artistic and scientific celebration of deep time and deeper connections. \nThis event will take place in the DeLuca Forum in the UW-Madison Discovery Building. \nRegistration requested

SUMMARY:Finding Your Place in Science
DESCRIPTION:A reflective workshop on belonging\, identity\, and the paths of science\, guided by Madison author\, editor\, and writing mentor. All Welcome.\n\n\nFinding Your Place in Science: A Writing Workshop to Explore Scientific Identity \nOct. 20\, 3 pm\, Location: 1145 Discovery Building \nLight snacks provided \nMichelle Wildgen is an editor\, teacher\, and writer of literary fiction and essays\, as well as the author of four novels and cofounder of the Madison Writers’ Studio. \nA scientific identity – essentially\, whether a person feels they belong in the world of science —is associated with longevity and success in STEM-related fields. But what does it mean to belong in science? Does it matter if you identify as a science person? \nAs part of the Wisconsin Science Festival\, the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery is offering a writing workshop focused on scientific identity\, aimed at undergrad and graduate students\, but also open to the public. We’ll discuss some of the components researchers have identified as part of this sense of belonging in science; consider some of the conscious and unconscious assumptions we might have about who belongs in science; and expand our definitions and explore how varied a scientific identity can be. With a mix of discussion in small and large groups and impromptu writing\, we’ll investigate the broad concept of an identity and how it can be useful in the face of obstacles. Finally\, we’ll consider the more specific idea of belonging in the scientific realm\, what helps you find that sense of belonging and what might prevent it. \nThis workshop is not solely for people who already feel they belong–plenty of people study and work in science without being certain if they do–but for anyone who is interested in using writing and discussion to consider and clarify what this concept of scientific identity means to you.

SUMMARY:Crossroads of Ideas: Growing Without Gravity
DESCRIPTION:Can plants thrive amid the zero-gravity chaos of space? Could the stars themselves hold the recipe for life? Join Crossroads to find out!\n\n\nReady to leave Earthly bounds behind? Join us for an absolutely out-of-this-world Crossroads of Ideas\, where astrobiology and astrochemistry come together in cosmic fashion! Plant biologist Dr. Simon Gilroy and astrochemist Dr. Susanna Widicus Weaver are your guides for an evening of star-studded discovery\, diving into everything from the surprising resilience of plants in space to the chemistry that could hint at life beyond our planet. Moderated by Eric Wilcots\, this event will tackle cosmic questions like: How do plants handle the zero-gravity chaos of space? Could the stars themselves hold the recipe for life? With Gilroy’s upcoming plant experiment on the International Space Station and Weaver’s quest to uncover the secrets of interstellar molecules\, this is more than a talk—it’s an invitation to explore life’s mysteries among the stars! \n \nGuest presenters Simon Gilroy\, Susanna Widicus Weaver\, and moderated by Eric Wilcots. \nDr. Simon Gilroy is a plant biologist whose research seeks to understand how plants and microbes respond to the alien world of spaceflight. He received his bachelor’s degree in botany from the university of Cambridge in England and a Ph.D. in plant biochemistry from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He pursued postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley before becoming a faculty member at PennState and then moving to his current position in the Department of Botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007. He is a fellow of the American Society for the Advancement of Science and a recipient UW-Madison’s Bassam Shakashiri Public Science Engagement Award. He serves on NASA’s Biological and Physical Sciences Advisory Committee and is currently preparing to send his seventh plant experiment to the International Space Station in March 2025. \n \nSusanna Widicus Weaver\, Vozza Professor of Chemistry and Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin\, is an expert in prebiotic astrochemistry. Her research\, combining laboratory spectroscopy\, observational astronomy\, and chemical modeling\, is aimed at understanding the mechanisms driving interstellar chemistry and the pathways for the formation of life. She received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Illinois Wesleyan University (2000) and her Ph.D. in chemistry at Caltech (2005). She was a postdoctoral fellow in Chemistry and Astronomy at the University of Illinois from 2005-2008. Before moving to Wisconsin in 2020\, she was a Professor of Chemistry at Emory University. She is the Provisional Director of the Wisconsin Center for Origins Research at UW-Madison. She is also a member of the Chemical Sciences Roundtable at the National Academy of Sciences. \n\n\nWe value inclusion and access for all participants. If you would like to request reasonable accommodations to enhance your participation experience\, please email idhub@wid.wisc.edu no later than 2 weeks prior to the event.
