9PM Colin Hemme

What are you doing at this hour?

I’m often editing the podcast for CaSP (Catalysts for Science Policy).  In a Perfect Policy, most recently the episode we released about state microbe, or working on a policy brief like one I wrote recently on water fluoridation in Wisconsin. I might also be working on the newsletter for CaSP.

Sleeping. I’m a night owl and if I’m not doing work like this, I’m gaming or doing some other fun activity.

What do you like most about this time?

It’s quiet. I don’t have any responsibilities other than what I want to do (except take my dog out for his nightly walk), so I can put on some calm music, start editing and writing, and get a lot of work done.

What do you like least?

By this point, I am usually tired, but a lot of my life is staring at screens and this does affect my sleep sometimes.

How can you tell if your work is going well? What do you do if it’s not?

Editing the podcast doesn’t have failure points–it just has to get done. When it comes to policy briefs, they get edited by a lot of people, so you often wonder if your brief is too detailed or too partisan, and you have to shake up the writing a lot until the brief is finally done.
